Indian Premier League, preview, KKR vs MI: Dinesh Karthik under the microscope without playing a match
Dinesh Karthik is perhaps one of the most undeclared cricketers in India, making the most deals through most of his international career. He was unfortunately playing at the time of MS Dhoni, so was always playing second fiddle as wicketkeeper. Then when the new captain arrived, the younger Rishabh Pant was given priority, ending Karthik’s India’s aspirations. Even at the Indian Premier League (IPL) level, before he fielded Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), there are already statements in the media about how Eoin Morgan should replace Karthik as captain if KKR did not start well. IPL 2020.
Mumbai Indians will not be happy after losing to Chennai Super Kings in their opening match. Surprisingly, Saurabh Tiwari was the only plus in a game where all the others were on the field, but never did well and distributed to bowlers and batsmen alike.
But crucially, they have a sense of the circumstances while KKR will come into the blind, which can be a big difference.
KKR brings some interesting names to the stage. Andre Russell returns, as does Sunil Naren. Although Russell’s power-packed form was never in doubt, Naren’s abilities with the bat at the top of the innings really surprised many.
KKR has names. Eoin Morgan for sure, plus Pat Cummins, Kuldeep Yadav’s left forearm spin and fiery fast Lockie Ferguson, just to name a few.
Then there is the curiosity factor – the first American of Ali Khan’s size to play IPL.
But despite how many potential match winners you have, it is how the team adds that makes for good results. It does not reflect well for anyone if aspiration is cast about the captain before he has a chance to show his ware.
For Mumbai Indians, they are unlikely to make any changes in the side despite their losses. Tiwari is a swimmer, but being the top scorer in the previous match, he won the next match.
The Mumbai Indians would certainly be confident to win this one, although the result of one attack by any of the boys of KKR could be enough to change the outcome.
So never say no, and wait for a close competition.
