IPL 2020, DC vs KXIP: Preeti Zinta, Virender Sehwag Fume at Umpire’s controversial “short run” call

The DC vs KXIP IPL 2020 clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium had all the thrills and spills of a T20 game, all packed in one, and with it some controversy, which is threatening to boil over. The Delhi Capitals made a winning start to their IPL 2020 campaign by defeating Kings XI Punjab in the Super Over, but did so by the skin of their teeth. Punjab threw the match despite needing to score just one run from the last 3 balls. But even that scenario would not have been understood had the umpire not called Chris Jordan for a short time.

Kings XI Punjab co-owner and Bollywood actor Preity was not the least happy with the umpire’s controversial call and stated her feelings on Twitter.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag also slammed the umpire for his decision and sarcastically said that he should have been given the man of the match award.

After Mayank Agarwal’s great guns, KXIP needed 21 runs off the final 10 balls, when Englishman Chris Jordan was called for a short run by square leg umpire Nitin Menon at the striker’s end.

An angle on TV replays showed that Jordan had indeed pulled his bat over the line, but despite that the original decision Menon had made to score Punjab a run did not turn up.

By the end of this over, Kings XI Punjab needed 13 runs from the last six balls and not 12. Mayank Aggarwal brought the score level by scoring 12 runs off the first three balls, but the match ended with Punjab winning the match. A ‘short run’ was not decided to separate the three balls.

In the end, Marcus Stoinis put a rabbit out of the hat, putting a dot ball and then sending the match to a super over with the wickets of Aggarwal and Chris Jordan.

Punjab Capitals managed to score just two runs after winning the match in a canter in the Super Over.
